About Kau & South Island
The Ka'u District, located in the southern part of the Big Island, is a sparse region with remote beaches and larger waves. You'll find the southernmost part of the United States there at an historic place called Ka Lae or South Point
. Other highlights include one of the best black sand beaches
in the islands and a rare green sand beach
. With a capable 4x4 vehicle you can follow rugged roads to beaches that are seldom seen - ever heard of Road to the Sea
? Most island visitors pass right through Kau (pronounced kah-oo) on the way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
from the Kona District
, but they should stop to enjoy the honest little towns and explore the southern beaches too. The Kau District is a wild and wonderful area that you should check out on your next Big Island trip.
