About Kau & South Island
The Ka'u District, located in the southern part of the Big Island, is a sparse region with remote beaches and larger waves. You'll find the southernmost part of the United States there at an historic place called Ka Lae or South Point. Other highlights include one of the best black sand beaches in the islands and a rare green sand beach. With a capable 4x4 vehicle you can follow rugged roads to beaches that are seldom seen - ever heard of Road to the Sea? Most island visitors pass right through Kau (pronounced kah-oo) on the way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from the Kona District, but they should stop to enjoy the honest little towns and explore the southern beaches too. The Kau District is a wild and wonderful area that you should check out on your next Big Island trip.
