About Broken Landing at South Point on Kau & South Island, Hawaii

Broken Landing or “Broken Road” gets its name from a road that stops at the ocean and is broken off at the end. It seems that in the past this road went all the way to the shore and that part broke up and fell into the water. Now it’s more of a “landing” above a pile of jumbo-sized lava rocks which are difficult to climb around on.

It’s not a popular place for anything but taking photos and hiking along the shoreline. The transition of grassy plains to sheer cliffs is something to behold. Fishing and snorkeling, for the most experienced snorkelers, is possible. The water here is often churning so it’s not easy to get into or onto the water. Kayaks could be launched here too with some skill and determination.

Trails and double-track roads follow the cliff tops southward all the way to South Point if you want to hike or ride a mountain bike. It’s less than a mile along the shore to the southernmost point, but trails continue to meander about the area for extending your exploration. Toilets are provided at South Point.
