Kohanaiki Beach Park (Pine Trees Surfing Beach)

Kohanaiki Beach Park, a.k.a. Pine Trees, is a surfing area named for the trees behind the beach that resemble pinyon pines. This is a long beach mixed into lava rock that stretches for about a mile. Most of the beach is backed by several holes of the Kohanaiki Golf Course with black lava rock between the holes. Anchialine Ponds (saltwater and freshwater mixed ponds) are also behind the beach

The most popular surfing area at Pine Trees is next to the last parking lot near the south end of the road. Local families and surfers will park on the beach right by the water in this area.

Camping in the park is allowed by getting a permit online through the Hawaii County website. Overnight parking passes can be obtained from the resort entrance station if you have a valid camping permit in hand.

Hikers can venture south from the turnaround at the end of the road and explore the shoreline in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park. There’s a lot to see in this direction. In about a mile this trail gets to Kaloko Fishpond a perfect turnaround point. Unfortunately the trail no longer crosses the rock outlet wall of the fishpond so you’ll have to hike around it if you want to continue.

To get to Kohanaiki Beach Park, turn off Highway 19 onto Hulikoa Drive in the Kohanaiki community. Stay right at the roundabout (the only option) then turn right again before you get the entrance shack. This road will wrap around the north end of the golf course. There are six parking lots behind the Kohanaiki Beach, plus another lot next to the restrooms and unpaved parking spaces directly behind the beach.
